An explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut has killed at least five people, according to the state news agency.
The car bomb exploded in the city's business district sending a large plume of black smoke up in the air.
Civil Defence personnel extinguish car fires at the sceneSecurity sources told Reuters that former Lebanese Minister Mohammad Chatah was among those killed in the explosion.
Chatah was reportedly an adviser to former anti-Syria coalition prime ministers Saad Hariri and Fuad Siniora.
Smoke rises from the site of the explosionThe prominent economist and former finance minister was killed as he headed to Hariri's mansion in the city centre.
He was due to attend a meeting of the March 14 anti-Syria coalition which backs the Syrian opposition struggle to topple the Damascus regime.
Lebanese army personnel at the site of the explosionAmbulances are currently at the seen of the explosion and troops have been deployed.
Lebanon has seen a wave of bombings over the last few months amid tensions over the Syrian civil war.
